09.Jul.2010 Run for Your Life

You have to be as old as dirt almost (like me) to remember the Beatles cartoons on Saturday mornings.  I was just little girl, but I LOVED the Beatles.  My very first 45 was “Lady Madonna.”  One time when I was allowed the rare visit with my mother (who was abused by my father), I talked her into taking me to “Let It Be” at the drive-in theater when it came out.  I watched those cartoons too, every week, when they were on in the mid-1960′s.  Here’s the cartoon associated with “Run for Your Life” which is on the Rubber Soul Album, one of my favorite albums.  This song though is shocking for the Beatles…as much as I like them, this song always scared me (listen to the words…I suspect they came more from Lennon than McCartney).   Goes to show how easily violence against women make it into any kind of media, even for little girls.

  • I’m older than dirt ~ was in high school when you were watching cartoons!

However, I was likely rocking to this tune without actually listening to the lyrics. Even if I did, I was too naive to know what they meant or that I would one day be the little girl on the run from a jealous, abusive man.

    Great post, Nancy!

  • Yeah…how do you like that verse “Let this be a sermon, I mean everything I said. Baby I’m determined and I’d rather see you dead.” Eekkkkk!
